Serena Williams one upped her big sister Venus in head-to-head matches by winning their fourth meeting in the Wimbledon finals, 7-6, 6-2.
After Venus’ backhand return hit the net for Serena’s winning match point, the little sister fell to her knees in astonishment. It’s Serena’s first Wimbledon championship in six years, and she spoiled Venus winning Wimbledon for the third consecutive year to be the first woman with three straight titles at the All-England Club in London since Steffi Graf in 1991-1993.

“I can’t believe I won. I can’t believe I’m holding it and not Venus,” Serena said of the Wimbledon championship plate, the Venus Rosewater Dish. “It’s named for Venus. I feel honored and really blessed. I’m just really excited and I look forward to the doubles.”
Serena, 27, improved to 11-10 over Venus, 29, in head-to-head matches and has won three of their four matches at Wimbledon.
But there are no hard feelings. Venus, who beat Serena last year for her fifth Wimbledon title, said it’s always a challenge playing her little sister, and she also looked forward to pairing up after the single match for Wimbledon’s doubles finals, which they won for their eighth major doubles championships.
“She was just too good,” Venus said. “She had an answer for everything. She played her best tennis today, so congratulations.”
Their father and former trainer, Richard Williams, didn’t witness it. He never watches matches in which his daughters are adversaries. So he left England and returned to Florida to cut his lawn, which is his tradition when his girls are matched against each other in the finals.
But he’ll hear all about his daughters’ match from his ex-wife who was in attendance and can take credit for giving birth 15 months apart to the dynamic tennis players.By Teneshia LaFaye
