Does anyone tell the truth anymore or practice what they preach?
Two weeks ago, Philadelphia coach Andy Reid added his team to the list of 26 NFL clubs that claimed to have no interest in signing three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick, who was reinstated to play in the NFL last month after being freed from a two-year sentence for funding a dogfighting ring.
With five-time Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb and one of the most talented offenses in the league, Reid said the elusive Vick is not a good fit for the Eagles.
So it’s very hypocritical for Reid and the Eagles to sign Vick to a two-year deal Thursday to bring him in as McNabb’s backup. McNabb lobbied to bring his former nemesis on the team.

Vick led the Atlanta Falcons in their NFC championship loss to McNabb and the Eagles in 2005, and Philly ended up losing to New England at the Super Bowl in Jacksonville.
Here’s what Reid said about Vick two weeks ago:
“Number one, I think he’s a good kid. Right now we have a good situation at quarterback so that’s not the direction I’m looking. I’m glad Tony Dungy is involved, no finer person around than Tony Dungy. And Michael, the times I’ve talked to him, he’s a good kid, so I think that combination there will help Michael and probably increase his marketability there.”
Maybe Coach Reid just didn’t want to tip his hand and create a demand for Vick, which would have driven up the asking price for the former No. 1 pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. But it makes me question if the other 25 teams were also lying about their interest in the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback.
But I guess Vick’s signing shouldn’t be too surprising. All you had to do was read between the lines to see that Reid was actually interested in bringing Vick in. The coach mentioned that Vick is a good kid and that he was pleased that Vick was working with former Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy, and Dungy said earlier this week that he expected Vick to sign with a team by the end of this week.
Obviously Reid had a recent meeting with Vick, and he and Dungy talked about the Eagles bringing in Vick.
The Eagles will pay a price for Vick’s presence on their roster because the PETA crazies have put Philadelphia on their tour map to protest the signing of Vick and a small percentage of Eagles fans will threaten to give up their season tickets.
But Vick deserves a second chance after doing time for his crime, and it will be interesting to see how opposing defenses handle Vick, McNabb and two-time Pro Bowl tailback Brian Westbrook in the same backfield because Vick will likely be used during those new Wildcat formations.
