Avatar director James Cameron said he has a new admiration for trees and he’s getting a lot of credit for the special effects that created the amazing fantasy world of Pandora in his record-setting blockbuster movie.
But long before Cameron brought us Avatar, Michael Jackson wrote “Earth Song” in 1995 and performed in the accompanying video to urge us to stop destroying our environment.
Before he died in June, Michael had a mini-film created for “Earth Song” that was to be shown during his “This Is It” tour in London that never took place because of the pop star’s fatal doctor-induced prescription drug overdose.
Now, MJ’s “Earth Song” film will be shown at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday for the show’s first-ever 3-D performance. Show producer Ken Ehrlich said 3-D glasses can be picked up at local Target stores to view the Grammy’s tribute to Michael Jackson.

The film will be part of the Grammys’ tribute performances by Smokey Robinson, Usher, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson and Carrie Underwood to honor Michael with the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
In a scene from his “This Is It” movie that hit theaters last summer, Michael talks about the “Earth Song” film and parts of the film are revealed. One of the scenes is very similar to a scene in Avatar when the bulldozers come to plow through the greenery, except a little girl is nearly run over in “Earth Song”. In Avatar, Na’vi warrior Jake Sully is nearly plowed over.
But remember Michael Jackson thought of it first, and he wants all of us to do our part to save the environment. I’ve got my free 3-D glasses from Target to see Mike’s film. Now, go get yours.By Teneshia LaFaye
