Jay-Z and Beyonce dance around talking publicly about their eight-year relationship, but they finally acknowledged their nearly two-year marriage on music’s biggest stage, the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, on Sunday.
After winning a Grammy for Best Pop Vocalist for “Halo”, Beyonce said she wanted to thank her “family for all of their support, including my husband. I love you.” Jay-Z raised his hands in giddy astonishment from his front row seat next to their nephew, the son of Beyonce’s younger sister Solange. B must have been so smitten by Jay because she didn’t realize that it was her sixth Grammy of the night, a record for a female artist.
In 2004, Beyonce won five Grammys off her debut album to tie the previous record shared by Alicia Keys, Norah Jones and Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse and Alison Kraus.
Beyonce’s six Grammys on Sunday make her the most decorated woman in one night in the Grammys’ 52-year history. But she lost out to Taylor Swift for Album of the Year to end the night. Taylor won for her Fearless album and the 20-year-old was so surprised that she said she will tell her future grandchildren, when she’s 80, about her victory.
Beyonce won the first major Grammy of the night, Song of the Year, for co-writing “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It), which inspired men, women, children and other singers, such as Justin Timberlake and Joe Jonas, to make their own videos of her song. She wasn’t able to accept the Song of the Year award because she was backstage preparing for her performance. She marched through the audience with an all-male army and sang “If I Were a Boy”. In the middle of her song, she transitioned to Canadian singer Alanis Morissette’s 1995 No. 1 hit song, “You Ought to Know”, and then fell back to “If I Were a Boy” to end her performance.
Here’s Alanis Morisette’s performance of “You Ought to Know” at the 38th Annual Grammys.
Incidentally, Alanis Morisette became the youngest to win the Grammys’ Album of the Year until Taylor Swift’s victory Sunday night. At the time 21 years old, Alanis won for her debut album, Jagged Little Pill, which included “You Ought to Know”.
On Sunday night, Beyonce also won a Grammy for Best R&B Contemporary Album for I Am … Sasha Fierce.
Earlier in the night, Jay-Z brought his and Beyonce’s little nephew, Julez, to the stage with him and Rihanna to accept a Grammy for Best Rap/Song collaboration for “Run This Town”.By Teneshia LaFaye
