What’s the big deal about Tim Tebow’s head getting shaved into a freaky cut?
As part of traditional NFL rookie hazing, Tebow recently complied while his veteran Denver Broncos teammates shaved his head to look like the friendly, bald and fat monk Friar Tuck from Robin Hood books and movies.
However, the former University of Florida quarterback’s hair cut also looks like the crown of thorns laid upon Jesus’ head after being beaten to a pulp and then being crucified.
By comparison, Tebow’s hair cut is no big sacrifice.
Tebow, a devout Christian, didn’t get whipped or hung in effigy like his savior Jesus Christ. All the humble, muscle-bound quarterback did was what most NFL rookies do. He let veterans make a fool of him.
But Tebow’s compliance is commendable considering fellow rookie and Dallas receiver Dez Bryant refused to even carry a veteran’s equipment from the field.By Teneshia LaFaye

July 27th, 2010Entertainment, Sports, Terrell Owens
Six-time Pro Bowl receiver Terrell Owens has developed a reputation for putting on a show on and off the football field, and now he has guaranteed Cincinnati Bengals games will be must-see TV during the upcoming NFL season.
By signing a one-year $2 million deal with an extra $2 million in incentives, T.O. is joining fellow showboat and off-field buddy Chad Ochocinco. Chad said that he and his best friend are like Batman and Robin, and he joked that their star power will lead to Bengals’ games being available only on a pay-per-view channel.
Before joining the Bengals, T.O. announced at Chad’s Super Bowl party in February that he would change his last name from Owens to Ocho Uno to coincide with Ochocinco, Chad’s new last name after he dropped Johnson to skirt NFL rules last year.

Owens and Ochocinco are among the top 5 active receivers in the league, but make nearly as many penalties as touchdowns because of their on-field antics, which have enabled them to cash in with their own reality TV shows on VH-1.
T.O. stars in his second season of The Terrell Owens Show, which documents his everyday life while Ochocinco has a new dating show, The Ultimate Catch, in which 85 women compete to be his main lady.
T.O., who is with his fifth team in 15 NFL seasons, and Ochocinco will make the Bengals very entertaining to watch this season and complement a strong running game to make Cincy a playoff contender.By Teneshia LaFaye

July 10th, 2010Kobe Bryant, L.A. Lakers, LeBron James, Sports
Usually teenagers count down to when they can graduate high school and get out of Dodge to experience life.
But LeBron James stayed near his hometown of Akron and happily became the Cleveland Cavalier’s No. 1 draft pick in 2003. Then, he almost singlehandedly delivered the Cavs’ first NBA title when he led the franchise to its first NBA Finals at the age of 22.
But when the Cavs wouldn’t lure or pay big money to add marquee players, LeBron devised a plan with fellow 2003 draftees and Olympic gold teammates Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to join the same NBA team to win league championships together.

The plan worked out so the trio is taking less money to join forces and LeBron is finally leaving the nest to play for the Miami Heat, which drafted D-Wade in 2003. However, going where there are no state taxes and playing in paradise isn’t really a sacrifice. But it would have taken big money to get the trio to come to a dump like Cleveland and the Cavs wouldn’t pony up.
Don’t question LeBron’s loyalty to his home state team. Any one watching his one-hour “Decision” special on ESPN on Thursday could see that it weighed on the reigning NBA MVP’s spirit. But as James said, he took the Cavs to places they’ve never been. And King James didn’t have a star sidekick, such as Scottie Pippen or Pau Gasol, as Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant had to help them win multiple NBA titles.

I don’t agree that LeBron has tainted his legacy or that he ran away from a challenge in Cleveland to take the easy road to an NBA title by joining forces with Wade, another top 3 player, and Bosh, a top 10 player, in Miami. It’s common in the NBA these days. Players don’t stay with the same team like Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Even Jordan left Chicago and played for the Wizards. Charles Barkley left Philadelphia to try to win an NBA title in Phoenix and Houston, and for the same reason, Karl Malone left Utah for Los Angeles, Clyde Drexler left Portland for Houston, Shaq left Orlando for L.A., and Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen left their teams for Boston. All of their legacies aren’t tainted because they left the team they’re most identified with. They are all Hall of Famers and LeBron will be also.
Shaq, a future Hall of Famer, pulled a LeBron when he left Orlando for Los Angeles in 1996. He was one of the top 3 players in the league and had taken the Magic to its first NBA Finals after he and his teammates dismanted Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the Eastern Conference Finals. But Shaq became an even bigger star in L.A., winning three consecutive NBA championships and three NBA Finals MVP trophies. Then, he left L.A. for Miami and won a fourth title.
Kobe tried to get out of L.A. although he had three championship rings by riding Shaq’s coattails. After Shaq left L.A. for Miami, the Lakers made first round playoff exits two years in a row, so Kobe wanted to be traded out of L.A. and Phil Jackson was about to retire. But the Lakers’ wouldn’t let Kobe out of his contract and stepped up to surround Kobe with better players.

Had the Cavaliers done the same, Cleveland residents and 7 million ESPN viewers wouldn’t be witnesses to LeBron leaving for Miami. Cleveland is just not willing to pay for great talent.
Shortly after LeBron was drafted to Cleveland, I had a chance to be the Cavs’ official team reporter. I would have been the Vic Ketchman for the Cavaliers. Ketchman is the longtime beat writer for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ web site. But Cleveland’s front office low balled me, expecting me to take a pay cut to leave Florida for Cleveland. So I stayed in Jacksonville.
Ironically, LeBron has decided to take a pay cut to play and attempt to win NBA championships in sunny Florida. And as long as he wins some league championships, King James’ legacy will be intact, like Shaq, to prove he made the right move.By Teneshia LaFaye

June 18th, 2010Kobe Bryant, L.A. Lakers, Michael Jordan, Sports
The Celtics appeared to back Kobe Bryant into a wall when he received no help from teammates for Boston to take a 3-2 NBA Finals series lead into Los Angeles.
Kobe saw his legacy slipping away and said he wouldn’t be considered the greatest Laker ever if he lost his second NBA championship at the hands of the Celtics to make him 0-2 in the NBA Finals against Boston.
But a strange thing happened on the way back to L.A. Kobe’s teammates stepped up to his level of play and won back-to-back games for the Lakers’ 16th NBA title, their second in a row, to put them within one championship of the Celtics’ league-best 17 NBA titles.
Kobe had 23 points and 15 rebounds in L.A.’s 83-79 Game 7 victory on Thursday to earn the NBA Finals MVP trophy for the second year in a row. During the postgame press conference, Kobe admitted that it means a lot that his former Lakers teammate and three-time Finals MVP Shaquille O’Neal said that Kobe would be the greatest Laker ever if he closed out the Celtics.

Beating the Celtics in the finals gives Kobe and teammate Derek Fisher, five NBA titles to tie my favorite Laker, Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, for the most by any Laker player. Kareem also won a title with the Milwaukee Bucks.
And now that Kobe has been crowned greatest Laker over Hall of Famers, such as Kareem, Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Earvin “Magic” Johnson and future Hall of Famer Shaq, Bryant can focus on how he stacks up to the greatest to ever play the game, six-time NBA champion and six-time NBA Finals MVP Michael Jordan.
Back-to-back NBA MVP LeBron James, a free agent who likely is not returning to his home state Cleveland Cavaliers, doesn’t deserve to be mentioned in the same breathe as Kobe and Jordan. And LeBron better choose his next team very carefully and win his first NBA championship and a few more if he wants to get back into that conversation.
Jordan has one more NBA championship than Kobe, but Kobe, 32, has won his fifth three years younger than Jordan did. Of course, Kobe came straight from high school to the NBA while Jordan detoured to college and had a mini NBA retirement to try his hand at professsional baseball.
So Kobe is exactly where Jordan was in his prime and he has to recover from a knee injury and finger injury to try to match Jordan’s rings next season, and he’s hoping to bring back his coach, Phil Jackson, who was Jordan’s coach during Chicago’s two three-peats in the 1990s. If Kobe, Jackson and the Lakers, get a second three-peat, L.A. fans can certainly make a case that Kobe is as good or better than Jordan.
That would give Kobe a sixth NBA title to match Jordan and it would tie the Lakers with the Celtics for the league’s record in NBA championships. However, Celtics great Bill Russell, who the NBA Finals MVP trophy is named for, still boasts the most NBA titles for a player, 11. Only Lakers coach Phil Jackson has as many, six with the Bulls and now 5 with the Lakers.
So it will be interesting to see if Kobe can tie Jordan and if Phil can surpass Bill. Well, that’s a story for next year. For now, Kobe can celebrate reaching his quest of being the greatest Laker to play the game.By Teneshia LaFaye

Elin Nordegren deserves a lot of credit.
She stuck by her husband, Tiger Woods, even after more than a dozen women revealed separate affairs with the world’s No. 1 golfer to unleash a media circus around their neighborhood, their toddler’s school and every other area of their private lives.
Elin, a former Swedish model and babysitter for another professional golfer, even hung in there while Tiger attended sex rehab in Mississippi, where he listed the names of the 120 women he had affairs with.
But it’s the one woman Tiger left off the list that convinced Elin to sign divorce papers.
Raychel Coudriet, a 20-something daughter of the Woods’ neighbor in Orlando’s Isleworth Country Club, recently revealed a one-night stand with Woods in his home office. Tiger has known Raychel since she was 14 years old.
One affair is bad enough. 120 is much too much. And one with the girl from the neighborhood is par for the course.
Yes, Elin deserves a lot of credit for putting a permanent wedge between her and Tiger. And she is seeking a half billion payout, bigger than any purse Tiger has earned for his many tournament victories.By Teneshia LaFaye

Former University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow usually takes the high road and avoids controversial statements, but the outwardly religious athlete took a shot at his detractors after the Denver Broncos drafted him in the first round of the NFL Draft last week.
Tebow, who was projected to be a middle round selection because of his unpolished quarterback skills, said his critics motivated him to be one of the greatest college football quarterbacks and he plans to continue to prove detractors wrong by succeeding in the NFL.
“To all the critics. Thanks for all the motivation,” said Tebow shortly after being drafted. “It really has been a motivation for me and will continue to be.”
Tebow’s words immediately brought to mind “So Ambitious” on Jay-Z’s latest No. 1 album. In “So Ambitious”, producer Pharrell sings, “The motivation for me was them telling me what I could not be…. Hey if you believe it. Then you can conceive it.”
Tebow listened to critics say that he doesn’t have the skills to play quarterback in the NFL for the last couple years of his UF college football career, and he heard it throughout the months leading up to the draft. But he got the last laugh by being drafted in the opening round and he has the motivation to prove that he’s worthy of being a top NFL draft pick.By Teneshia LaFaye

The Philadelphia Eagles made a big mistake by dealing six-time Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb to their division rival, the Washington Redskins, on Sunday.
The Eagles traded away aging, but still effective McNabb for a high second round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, and backup Kevin Kolb has been named the starter in Philly even though three-time Pro Bowler Michael Vick was resigned last month.
McNabb is just what new Redskins coach Mike Shanahan needs to build a potent offense. McNabb’s style is similar to John Elway, who was Shanahan’s quarterback for two Super Bowl championship teams in Denver.
What was the Eagles’ management thinking, dealing McNabb to a division rival? Didn’t they learn from Green Bay forcing Brett Favre to retire, two years ago, only to suffer last season in losses in both matchups against the Favre-led Minnesota Vikings, which advanced to the NFC Championship game?
Obviously, Philly coach Andy Reid didn’t see McNabb’s trade coming because last month he squashed trade rumors and said he and the Eagles’ management felt McNabb should remain the team’s starter.
McNabb, who set every Eagles passing record in 11 seasons, says he looks forward to a future with the Redskins, and I bet he can’t wait to duplicate Favre’s success against his former team.By Teneshia LaFaye

I’m a second-generation University of Florida graduate, and I wanted to see Tim Tebow when he returned home to Jacksonville on Saturday to sign autographs at The Avenues Mall. But I decided not to go when I found out, two weeks ago, that it would cost $160. I never gave it another thought until I ran into my former co-worker Mike DiRocco, who is the Florida Gators beat writer for The Florida Times-Union, in the parking lot of The Avenues on Saturday morning.
After hugging and catching up, Mike asked me if I was at the mall to see Tebow, and I told him that I forgot about the former Heisman Trophy winner’s appearance and I was there to eat lunch with my teen son and return some uncomfortable shoes.
Once in the mall, it looked like we had walked into The Oaks Mall, which is down the street from the UF campus and the football stadium where Tebow set so many passing and rushing records in Gainesville.
Fans wearing variations of orange and blue shirts and replica No. 15 Tebow jerseys were everywhere and a long line of Tebow fans snaked around the second floor of the Avenues to wait for their brief one-on-one, and Tebow wasn’t scheduled to appear for a couple hours. His appearance was to kick off his Tim Tebow Foundation to spread his Christian faith, hope and love.
Fans, like me, who didn’t want to pay the $160, sat on the edge of the food court to observe the spectacle. I ate Japanese while getting acquainted with a nice USC fan named Char who also ate Japanese and is new to Jacksonville.
As luck would have it, my son and I were walking out of the mall an hour and a half later, when we saw some people hurrying over to a small gathering outside of Belk. While my son went to get the car, I walked over and stood next to Bob Tebow, Tim’s father, while Tim was interviewed by a few reporters, including Mike DiRocco. Tebow ended the interview session with “God bless”, and was escorted back inside the department store as teenage girls yelled, “Tim Tebow, you’re so fine!” My son rolled by to pick me up and I waved bye to DiRocco as he rushed to finish covering the fans waiting to see Tebow inside the mall.
Judging from the excitement Tim brought to a Jacksonville mall and how hundreds of fans waited inside on one of the most beautiful, sunny days in awhile, it makes me think that the local NFL team should draft Tebow to save the Jaguars from another season of blacked out home games, which would lead to the team’s departure for Los Angeles.
If Gators fans are willing to spend at least $160 to wait hours for a brief encounter with Tebow, imagine how many Jaguars tickets they would buy to support Tim as he carries a clipboard along the sidelines. During his freshman year at UF, a group of guys went to games wearing T-E-B-O-W across their torso in hopes to see Tim in action, and they witnessed him come in to make key plays that contributed to the Gators’ first national title in 10 years.
Who knows? The Jaguars may trade out of their No. 10 spot in the NFL Draft to get a later first round selection and regain the second round pick they traded last year to then select Tim Tebow in the second round. The Jaguars have a bigger need for defensive linemen and defensive backs, but the team also needs a franchise quarterback to groom for the near future because David Garrard isn’t capable of getting Jacksonville to the Super Bowl. And the team needs to fill the stadium or risk another season full of TV blackouts.
With Tebow on the roster, the Jaguars probably won’t contend for their first division title in 11 years, but Tim’s presence would certainly give the team a quarterback to build around and solve the team’s problem of selling the stadium out to prevent a move to L.A.
By the way, those teenagers were right.
Tebow looks hot in person, and I didn’t have to take $160 out of my bank account to find that out.By Teneshia LaFaye

February 20th, 2010Sports, Tiger Woods
Although he read from a 1,545-word script, I believe Tiger Woods was sincere during his 14-minute apology Friday for bringing down professional golf for his multiple affairs behind his wife’s back.
But I don’t think his public apology has done anything to alter the opinions people formed about him when the scandal broke last Thanksgiving.
And only time will tell if Tiger is really remorseful for what he described as giving into the temptations of being rich and famous because he felt entitled for working so hard to be the world’s top golfer and the first billionaire athlete.
Yet as he said, his private life is no one’s business but his and his wife Elin’s. It’s not like he cheated and contracted HIV to jeopardize other players as Magic Johnson did. Or that he was charged for raping a woman and thus cheating on his wife as Kobe Bryant did.
What Tiger did was wrong, but it’s between him and his wife.
That’s why it was unnecessary for him to give a public apology, which can be viewed in full here, to explain why he cheated.
The only people he owed an apology to were those of whom he likely already apologized to in private: his wife, his children, his mother, his staff, his sponsors, his foundation.
It’s hard to tell if Elin, who tabloids have speculated is divorcing the golfer, has forgiven Tiger. She wasn’t present during the press conference and it really doesn’t matter.
Former New York governor Eliot Spitzer and many other unfaithful public figures had their wives by their side during public apologies and ended up divorcing.
So it doesn’t matter that Elin wasn’t there. She was where she needed to be — home with her and Tiger’s two young children.
Since Tiger said he’s not returning to golf any time soon, his latest apology appeared to be his attempt to restore his wife’s image, appease his mom Kutilda who sat on the front row and to demand that paparazzi stop harassing his family, especially his 2-year-old daughter who has been followed to school.
But Tiger’s ultimatum likely fell on deaf ears. The paparazzi is still going to chase his wife, his mom, his children and him until he completes his sex rehab and returns to golf to give the media a less private reason to talk about him.
However, Tiger’s wife, mom, staff and others who care about him heard his apology loud and clear and I bet they have or will eventually forgive him. Those are the only people who deserved to hear an apology from him.By Teneshia LaFaye

Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade put on quite a show for the record crowd at the 2010 NBA All-Star Game at Texas Stadium on Sunday. Wade was named MVP after scoring 28 points, 11 assists and 5 steals in the East’s 141-139 victory over the West.
But five-time Grammy winner Usher stole the show before the game even began.
With moves reminiscent of his idol Michael Jackson and an array of pyrotechnics bursting from the stage, Usher treated the largest crowd (108,713) in basketball history to a lively performance of his NBA anthem “More” and his 2004 No. 1 hit “Yeah” to open the All Star game.
Shakira and Alicia Keys also gave great halftime performances.
