June 29th, 2010Entertainment, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson
Lady Gaga is naturally compared to legendary singer Madonna. She has the blonde locks, the powerful voice, sexy dance numbers, a rebellious persona, and even Madge’s facial features.
Gaga, who said Madonna has been a good friend, accepts the comparison. She revealed on Larry King Live that her mom looks like Madonna and that she looks more like her mom as she gets older.
But Gaga, the newly crowned Queen of Pop, also notices parallels between her life and King of Pop Michael Jackson, who died June 25 of last year.

Like Michael, she is considered a “freak”. Born Stefani Germanotta, Gaga was a social outcast and didn’t have many friends. It’s well known that Michael missed out on a childhood while travelling with his older brothers in the Jackson Five.
Like Mike, Gaga has a compassionate heart for underdogs. For Gaga, it’s the gay community. For Michael, it was poor or sick children. So while Gaga has her Little Monster fans who she hangs out with back stage and in bars during her world tour. Michael entertained thousands of little poor, sick and sometimes celebrity kids at his Peter Pan-inspired Neverland Ranch in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Like Michael, Gaga’s music videos are highly anticipated by the general public, and she has used her “Paparazzi” video to parody the media’s sensationalism while MJ sent the media a message with his 1988 “Leave Me Alone” video.

Then, there’s Gaga’s ever-changing hair, makeup and costumes. Of course, Michael dressed flamboyantly and his appearance changed drastically with every album while he masked his vitiligo skin condition and recovered from his hair catching afire during a 1984 Pepsi commercial shoot.
Gaga and Michael each have their imitators. Men and women wearing glittery gloves and moonwalking are staples of the Hollywood Boulevard scene. A long list of singers, including Usher, Chris Brown, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Beyonce, are inspired by the King of Pop. Over the years, many groups have re-inacted MJ’s “Thriller” dance, including actress Jennifer Garner and clubgoers in the movie 13 Going on 30.
While it’s speculated that Gaga has impacted Christina Aguilera’s style, she has influenced young boys to frat boys to sing renditions of her songs and mimic her dance routines on youTube. However, some of Gaga’s moves in “Bad Romance” are similar to MJ’s movies on “Thriller”.
Gaga, 24, confirmed to Larry King that MJ wanted her to open for him during his anticipated 50-show comeback tour at the O2 Arena in London. She said Michael’s death at age 50 forced her to think about her mortality. She noticed that many of the stars she admires, such as Michael and Queen’s Freddie Mercury, self-destructed and died prematurely. Michael often talked about dying, said his ex-wife and Elvis Presley’s daughter Lisa Marie Presley.
Hopefully, Gaga hangs around for many years to come to prove she can produce hits for decades as MJ and Madonna managed to do.By Teneshia LaFaye

June 28th, 2010Chris Brown, Entertainment, Michael Jackson
It was billed as a “surprise performance”; the Michael Jackson tribute people never got to see.
So as the man behind the curtain moved like the King of Pop and he pranced from behind the curtain down the stairs dressed like Mike in the video for “The Way You Make Me Feel”, it was as if MJ had come back from the dead to perform at the 10th Annual BET Awards on Sunday.
But it was Chris Brown, who was considered the heir apparent to Michael Jackson before he was exiled for beating his former girlfriend Rihanna in February 2009.
Chris Brown may have brought his career out of the doldrums Sunday after his on-point dancing tribute to the King of Pop, who died a year ago from a doctor-induced prescription drug overdose. Chris displayed Mike’s fancy, electric footwork, timely crouch grabs and thrusts as he sang “The Way You Make Me Feel” and danced to “Remember the Time”. He also repeated his crowd-pleasing “Billie Jean” routine from the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards that included MJ’s signature moonwalk and sidestepping.
It was the truly the MJ tribute fans had anticipated during BET’s original tribute to the King of Pop, days after his death on June 25 of last year. But Chris was pulled from last year’s show after hip hop king Jay-Z protested in support of his protege Rihanna.
That was just the beginning. Radio stations refused to play Chris’ music, he lost his Doublemint Gum and Milk endorsements and recently British authorities denied him a travel VISA to extend his tour to Great Britain.
But Chris’ BET performance on Sunday may have brought his career back from the dead.
After his dance tribute to MJ, Chris endeared himself to the crowd and TV viewers when he got too choked up to sing Mike’s “Man in the Mirror”, and he fought back tears throughout the song, even dropping to his knees as he reverenced the deceased pop king. But the crowd cheered him on and gave him a standing ovation as he moped off the stage.
Later in the show, Chris received BET’s AOL Fandemonium Award for having the biggest fan support, including text voting, video views, Twitter posts and photo uploads. He thanked his fans and promised to never let them down again, alluding to the Rihanna incident that cost his meteoric career to fall and led to probation and cleaning up trash on the side of the road. Ironically, the next BET
award, Viewer’s Choice, went to Rihanna and Young Jeezy for their song, “Hard”.
Chris deserves a second chance. Rihanna has moved on with her life with a successful world tour and a hot new boyfriend. And Chris has underdone court-ordered domestic violence classes and has shown remorse through recorded video and live televised apologies and now his second live televised performance since being exiled. The first was at the live televised “SOS: Help for Haiti” fundraiser when fans blew Chris kisses and shrieked throughout his performance.
In his song “Say Goodbye”, Chris sings “there’s never a right time to say goodbye, but we know that we gotta go out separate ways.” This is certainly the right time to separate the Rihanna incident from Chris’ career and say goodbye to his past to look forward to his renewed career. We all make mistakes and wish to be forgiven and Chris has earned the right to a fresh start.By Teneshia LaFaye

Michael Jackson, who died a year ago on June 25, is the greatest entertainer who ever lived.
You may disagree. But can you name another entertainer who just about everybody admired or imitated at some point in their lives?
Say what you want about his unusual personal life. But at some point in your life — probably before the first false child molestation allegation, Michael Jackson was your hero.
You sang,”ABC. Easy as 1-2-3.” You likely attempted the moonwalk. You probably begged your parents to buy you a zipper jacket like Michael’s. I’ll bet you bought a copy of Thriller to help make it the world’s best-selling album of all time. You knew all the words to “We Are the World”, the charity song MJ co-wrote with Lionel Richie, and you likely watched one of the network premiere’s of Michael’s music videos, including “Bad”, “Black or White” or “Remember The Time”.
Even my 16-year-old son, who was born after Michael’s prime, admired the King of Pop and played his greatest hits album, during our road trip to Miami months before he died.
I was driving in my car listening to sports talk radio last June when I heard that Michael Jackson had died. When I got home, I began writing a story per day about his accomplishments and the lessons everybody can learn from his life. I also had the opportunity to take my mother and stepfather to L.A. for Michael’s memorial and to visit MJ landmarks.
There’s no telling when there will be another entertainer as great as Michael Jackson, so take some time out of your day to watch one of his videos that are being aired all week to remind you of when the King of Pop was your hero.By Teneshia LaFaye

When Michael Jackson’s kids get older, they’ll likely hear or read about the allegations and jokes about the late King of Pop being a child molester.
But Prince Michael, Paris and Blanket Jackson know the truth. Michael Jackson was a good man and an amazing father. Twelve-year-old Paris, Michael’s only daughter, has pictures of her father covering her bedroom wall, something many teenagers did from Michael’s “Jackson 5″ days and on past “Thriller”.

Before he died last summer, Michael shielded his children from the spotlight. The world didn’t get a look at his children until after his death on June 25 last year when they appeared on stage for their father’s publicly televised memorial in L.A.’s Staples Center. Paris’ tearful goodbye was re-broadcast continuously on television news programs throughout the world.
For Father’s Day, TLC viewers will get a much calmer peak into the lives of Michael Jackson’s kids. At 9 p.m. Eastern on Sunday night, TLC airs the documentary, “Michael Jackson’s Kids: Hidden Lives”. The show will likely be aired continously for those who miss the initial Father’s Day broadcast.
It’s unclear whether Michael, who died at age 50 from a doctor-induced drug overdose, would have wanted the public to get such a candid look into his children’s lives, but of course, there’s nothing he can do about it.
However, Michael’s wishes for his children’s inheritance are being carried out as planned. His mother is taking care of the kids with her 40% share of his estate, and the kids will inherit the first part of their 40% stake when they each hit 30.By Teneshia LaFaye

April 4th, 2010Entertainment, Janet Jackson, Michael JacksonInternational superstar Janet Jackson appeared on The Oprah Show on Friday to promote her new movie, Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too?, but the interview was more about Janet’s big brother, deceased King of Pop Michael Jackson.
Oprah asked Janet where she was when she heard her brother died, her last interaction with Michael, whether she blames Michael’s doctor for his death, how his three children are doing, what his final words to Janet were and whether the family tried to intervene on Michael’s overuse of painkillers.

Janet said the family attempted several interventions, but Michael was in denial and probably trying to numb his pain from depression. But she blames his personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, for injecting the drugs that led to Michael’s death.
Tyler Perry, who sat beside Janet halfway through The Oprah Show, attested that the Jacksons “really, really, really” attempted an intervention, and Janet revealed that Michael’s final words to her were: “I love you.”
Janet was in the middle of taping “Why Did I Get Married Too?” when Michael died of a doctor-inducted drug overdose, and she channeled her pain into the film for some very emotional scenes. But Perry said he rewrote the movie’s ending, which would have required Janet to eerily speak at a funeral.

Janet said she still can’t believe her brother has died and she can’t bring herself to listen to his music or to watch “This Is It”, the movie featuring behind-the-scenes footage of Michael’s preparation for his month-long UK concert.

The stars literally have aligned in Michael Jackson’s favor.
First, the deceased King of Pop was honored on Sunday with a captivating 3-D tribute featuring Celine Dion, Smokey Robinson, Usher, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson to bestow the Grammys’ Lifetime Achievement Award.
Then, mega singers, rappers and actors united this week to remake “We Are the World”, a song MJ and Lionel Richie co-wrote in 1985 for USA for Africa to address famine in Ethiopia.
An accompanying video for the remake will be produced in 3-D and premiere on Feb. 12 to raise money for Haiti relief. Some of the featured singers are Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Gladys Knight, Toni Braxton, Usher, Lady Gaga, Pink, Kanye West, Jennifer Hudson, Lil Wayne, Jordin Sparks, Jeff Bridges, Tyrese and Wyclef Jean, a native of Haiti.
And in another move in Michael’s favor, police finally brought criminal charges against Dr. Conrad Murray, the doctor responsible for Michael Jackson’s fatal prescription overdose last June, and Dr. Murray turned himself in Tuesday.By Teneshia LaFaye

Avatar director James Cameron said he has a new admiration for trees and he’s getting a lot of credit for the special effects that created the amazing fantasy world of Pandora in his record-setting blockbuster movie.
But long before Cameron brought us Avatar, Michael Jackson wrote “Earth Song” in 1995 and performed in the accompanying video to urge us to stop destroying our environment.
Before he died in June, Michael had a mini-film created for “Earth Song” that was to be shown during his “This Is It” tour in London that never took place because of the pop star’s fatal doctor-induced prescription drug overdose.
Now, MJ’s “Earth Song” film will be shown at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday for the show’s first-ever 3-D performance. Show producer Ken Ehrlich said 3-D glasses can be picked up at local Target stores to view the Grammy’s tribute to Michael Jackson.

The film will be part of the Grammys’ tribute performances by Smokey Robinson, Usher, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson and Carrie Underwood to honor Michael with the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
In a scene from his “This Is It” movie that hit theaters last summer, Michael talks about the “Earth Song” film and parts of the film are revealed. One of the scenes is very similar to a scene in Avatar when the bulldozers come to plow through the greenery, except a little girl is nearly run over in “Earth Song”. In Avatar, Na’vi warrior Jake Sully is nearly plowed over.
But remember Michael Jackson thought of it first, and he wants all of us to do our part to save the environment. I’ve got my free 3-D glasses from Target to see Mike’s film. Now, go get yours.By Teneshia LaFaye

January 19th, 2010Entertainment, Haiti, Janet Jackson, Life, Michael Jackson
It’s no secret to Michael Jackson fans that he was very generous to the needy and sick children.
In 2000, the King of Pop was crowned King of Charity by the Guiness Book of World Records for donating more money to charity than any pop star. He donated to 39 different organizations, including Camp Ronald McDonald, Juvenile Diabetes Association and Make-A-Wish Foundation. He also had his own charities, such as Heal The World and Heal The World Kids.
And of course, MJ co-wrote the chart-topping, Grammy Award winning charity song “We Are The World” with Lionel Richie in 1986.

Dozens of legendary singers lent their voices to “We Are The World” to provide hope and to encourage everyone to “start giving” to charity and make the world a better place for every human being because “we are all part of God’s great big family” and by giving “we’re saving our own lives”.
There’s no doubt that Michael Jackson would be helping out in Haiti, where a massive earthquake left at least 100,000 dead and millions homeless last week, if he had not died from a doctor-induced drug overdose in June.
Michael and his pop star little sister Janet Jackson were reportedly supposed to perform in Haiti in 2008, and former U.S. president Bill Clinton praised Michael during a summer trip to Haiti following the King of Pop’s death.
Janet Jackson is actively seeking donations for the victims in Haiti through her Twitter page. She tweeted “$8 can feed a child for a whole month” and gave three options for giving.
- Call 1-800-HELP-NOW
- Text “Haiti” to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross
- Text “Yele” to 501501 to donate $5 to Haitian American hip hop star Wyclef’s Yele Haiti non-profit organization.Michael Jackson would be proud to know that his sister is stepping up in his place along with many other celebrities, such as George Clooney, Diddy, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and supermodel Gisele Bundchen. U.S. President Barack Obama has pledged $100 million toward Haiti relief.
But Michael Jackson would say that it shouldn’t just be left up to celebrities to help in the Haiti crisis. This is a world issue and everybody should chip in whatever they can, even $5, $8 or $10.
In MJ’s This Is It movie, he stated, “Everybody says, ‘Oh they’ll take care of it. The government will intervene.’ But it starts with us.”
Say what you want about his personal life, but Michael Jackson would be right there in Haiti lending a hand because he believed in loving each other and doing what you can to help your fellow man, even if the person is in another land.By Teneshia LaFaye

December 22nd, 2009Entertainment, Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson’s princely manners are on display in his This Is It movie that won’t be on DVD in time for Christmas.
However, MJ and his fans finally get to see the King of Pop’s reputation restored with the recent suicide of the father who forced his son to lie about being sexually assaulted by the pop star.
Michael Jackson’s fantasy life came crashing down in 1993 when 13-year-old Jordan Chandler and his father Evan falsely accused the pop icon of child molestation.
Much like with the current Tiger Woods scandal, the world eagerly came down on an insanely wealthy, legendary black man who finally showed a chink in his armor.
Many people were quick to believe MJ molested the little boys who visited his 2,500-acre Neverland Ranch that included an amusement park and a zoo, and Michael paid $22 million to the Chandlers to quiet the noise from a year-long police probe/media circus and return to his peaceful existence.
Although Michael sent millions to children’s charities and started his own foundations for kids, the King of Pop remained tormented by the molestation allegations for the remainder of his life, and he was falsely accused by another boy in 2004.

After Michael died of a doctor-induced drug overdose in June, Jordan Chandler, now 29 years old, admitted that his father, who was a Beverly Hills dentist at the time, made him lie about being molested by the pop icon to extort money.
In MJ’s This Is It movie, people were finally able to see Michael’s unscripted patience, kindness, humility and love. Evan Chandler witnessed it firsthand and saw an opportunity to take advantage of the pop star’s unusually unselfish, unconditional love for children that made up for his lost childhood traveling with his big brothers in the Jackson Five.
But Michael has been redeemed in death because Evan Chandler squandered all of his money and killed himself with a single bullet to his head in November, not long after his son came clean about the lies. It’s sad when someone takes his or her life, but I guess Evan Chandler reaped what he sowed for stealing part of Michael’s life.By Teneshia LaFaye

November 15th, 2009Entertainment, Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson, Rain
Mega Korean pop star Rain, who fashions his style after his favorites Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson, plays the lead role in new movie Ninja Assassin.

In Ninja Assassin, Rain’s character, Raizo, faces challenges eerily similar to the singer/actor’s real-life upbringing.
Rain, whose birth name is Jeong Ji-Hoon, grew up in poverty when his father left the family for better opportunities in Brazil. His mother died of diabetes complications when he was a teenager, and he often was beaten up on the streets while trying to get in with street dancers.
He was signed to be a part of Korean boy band, Fanclub, and said he and his bandmates were treated like caged animals as they were locked up and forced to rehearse for 10 hours without food.
Rain eventually broke away to become a solo star who sparks comparisons between himself and American pop stars Justin Timberlake and Michael Jackson, the King of Pop who died on the Asian star’s birthday. His last American stop at New York’s Madison Square Garden in 2006 sold out immediately and so did a subsequent concert to accommodate the interest.
Honestly, I had never heard of Rain until Transformers actress Megan Fox went gaga over him while promoting the second Transformers movie in Asia this past summer.
Rain’s streets-to-stardom life mirrors his Ninja Assassin character because Raizo is taken from the streets, treated like a commodity and forced to perform and breaks away to become the deadliest assassin in the world.
Ninja Assassin hits American theaters on Nov. 25. View the trailer:
