  • 1980s teen star Corey Haim killed from money and early fame

I was saddened to hear about the death of Corey Haim, one of the biggest and hottest teen stars in the late 1980s.
The Canadian graced the covers of all the teen magazines, and I had his posters on the wall to the right of the head of my bed.

He was so cute as the geeky kid who tried out for the football team to impress a cheerleader on Lucas, and I learned the word “superficial” at age 11 because that’s what Lucas called the cheerleader for choosing the football captain, portrayed by Charlie Sheen, instead of him.
Corey was hilarious on License to Drive, and I learned to never invite a vampire into my house when his character, Sam, made that mistake on The Lost Boys, and I wanted a big white Alaskan Malamute like Sam’s dog Nanook.
Corey’s death at age 38 of an accidental prescription drug overdose is heartbreaking, but it serves as a lesson to the parents who allow their children to run wild and get whatever they want instead of setting rules. It’s also a lesson for parents of young celebrities who let their children set their own rules and control their own money.
Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Kirk Cameron have made smooth transitions from adolescence stardom to adult fame because their parents kept them grounded.

Corey had a reputation for partying and abusing drugs, and he squandered his money as many, many child stars have. And I’ll bet it was a major blow to his self esteem to no longer be in the spotlight.
Corey’s problem is similar to what athletes face when they retire. After getting used to the spotlight and making millions, many retired athletes get hooked on drugs and/or alcohol and some resort to criminal acts.
So I hope parents, who were preteens and teenagers when Corey was famous, use his young death as a lightning rod to do a better job of preparing their children for the hardships of life.

  • Mo’Nique’s bad attitude helps her win the Oscar

    March 7th, 2010Teneshia LaFayeEntertainment

Mo’Nique had been chastised about her bad attitude and demands even before Precious opened at theaters in November and there were concerns of whether she is Oscar-worthy.
During a recent ABC interview, Mo’Nique was perceived to be rude toward television icon Barbara Walters.
But I say Mo’Nique’s attitude is exactly the reason she should take home the Oscar for Best Supporting Female Actress at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards on Sunday. And the Academy agreed and gave Mo’Nique the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
During her acceptance speech, Mo’Nique said she’s glad “politics” didn’t get in the way of being presented the Academy Award for her highly-acclaimed performance in Precious.
I’m too chicken to even take a peek at Precious after a couple of people described Mo’Nique’s monstrous, sinister behavior as an abusive mother toward her overweight, illiterate daughter.

After watching Precious, one actor said he would have slugged Mo’Nique if he would have run into her on the street.
The fact that the comedian incites fear and hatred instead of laughter is the reason the first-time Academy Award nominee should take home an Oscar.
Any one who has followed Mo’Nique’s career knows that she can’t talk without chuckling every few minutes, so it’s amazing that she was able to keep a straight, evil demeanor for the nearly two-hour duration of Precious while being overly abusive to her daughter.
From what I’ve heard, Mo’Nique’s portrayal on Precious was drastically different from the sensitive Nikki Parker who was lovable and friendly toward her daughter, Kim, and the lovestruck doormat for Professor Oglevee in the TV series The Parkers, which was taped from 1999-2004.
Mo’Nique wasn’t even taken seriously as a disciplinarian by her pupils in the reality series, Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School in 2007, when she was charged with making ladies out of the slutty women who competed for former Public Enemy hype man Flavor Flav on reality show, Flavor of Love.
So in spite of her diva offscreen behavior that even angered Oprah, Mo’Nique deserves credit for the nasty attitude that has transformed her as an actress.
And now she has an Oscar to accompany her Golden Globe and NAACP Image Award for her role in Precious.

  • Avatar director takes blame for losing to ex-wife for Best Director and Best Motion Picture at the Oscars

    March 7th, 2010Teneshia LaFayeEntertainment

Avatar director James Cameron had a chance to win his fourth and fifth Oscar on Sunday, but he lost out to wife No. 3 Kathryn Bigelow who won the Best Director and Best Motion Picture categories for The Hurt Locker at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards.
Cameron and Bigelow were married from 1989-1991, which was after Cameron’s first Terminator and Aliens but before Titantic. While in between marriages to two other women in 1995, Cameron co-wrote Strange Days for Bigelow.
Kathryn Bigelow is the first female to win the Oscar for Best Director for directing The Hurt Locker, and James can take some of the credit for agreeing to look over the movie script for Kathryn and then recommending that she drop whatever she was doing to accept the offer to direct The Hurt Locker.
Cameron’s Avatar has been more of a box office success than Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker. But while he won Best Motion Picture at the Golden Globes, she snagged the Golden Globe for Best Director to become the first female to accomplish the feat. During his acceptance speech for Best Motion Picture, James acknowledged Kathryn’s accomplishment.
Cameron, who is now in his longest marriage to wife No. 5 Suzy Amis, had said he hoped his ex beats him again to win the Oscar for Best Director while he takes home the trophy for Best Picture.
But Kathryn ended up winning both categories at the Academy Awards on Sunday in a major triumph for women and especially ex-wives.

  • Hot Tub Time Machine has funny name, but the movie is a funnier Back to the Future

    2
    scissors
    March 5th, 2010Teneshia LaFayeEntertainment

Don’t let the name fool you. Hot Tub Time Machine is hilarious.
The movie comes out at the end of this month, and I saw the sneak preview Thursday night with my family, which I wouldn’t recommend because there was a lot of profanity and sexual humor and simulation.
But adult content aside, Hot Tub was a fun movie. It’s a cross between Porky’s, Back To the Future, Sixteen Candles and The Karate Kid, and it even had some of the stars from those movies, such as the man who played George McFly on Back To the Future and the guy who was the bully Johnny on The Karate Kid.
The star of Hot Tub is 2012’s John Cusack, who acted in a lot of teen movies, such as 1980s classics Say Anything and Sixteen Candles. He portrays one of three best friends who are unhappy with their lives. They flee to a cabin in the mountains after one of them nearly commits suicide to Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home”.
While getting drunk and goofing off in a hot tub, the friends end up back in 1986. Things appear to be normal until the one-armed bellman greets them and has both arms. Then, they notice other lodgers are wearing legwarmers and “Where’s The Beef?” T-shirts and rocking to cassette players instead of Ipods and MP3s.
To confirm the time period, one of the guys asks a girl,” What color is Michael Jackson?”, and he screams when the girl says “black” because in 1986 the King of Pop’s skin color hadn’t turned white yet.
The friends soon realize they have an opportunity to change their pathetic present existence, but they fear a butterfly effect will alter their future for the worst.
Hot Tub plays out like Back To the Future with the kid seeing his mom behave like a slut in her early years, a Biff-acting bully, a future child facing non-existence and one friend plays with a band and includes a selection from the future, The Black Eyed Peas’ “Let’s Get It Started”. In order to return to the present, the pals have to fix the flux capacitor, just like in Back To The Future.
Chevy Chase makes a few cameos in a role that parallels Christopher Lloyd’s Doc Brown in Back To the Future, Christopher Walken’s Morty in Click and Don Knotts’ TV repairman in Pleasantville.
Fans of the 1980s and movies from that decade will enjoy going back to 1986 with the guys in Hot Tub Time Machine. The movie hits theaters on March 26.

  • Sorry, guys! Megan Fox says one-night stands “make me sick”

March 4th, 2010Teneshia LaFayeEntertainment, Megan Fox

Megan Fox has portrayed an object of desire in her last five or six movies, including the two Transformers, Jennifer’s Body and recently Jonah Hex.
And in the last year, she has talked about the men and women she desires and her preference for a lesbian lover rather than a bisexual.
Yet, the 23-year-old Fox said she has only slept with two men in her young life and the thought of a one-night stand “makes me sick” during an interview to go along with her cover of Harpar Bazaar’s April issue.
Not sure if Megan is telling the truth about her sexual history, and it’s not my place to find out.
Regardless, she has sent a strong message to her legion of male admirers who have undoubtedly daydreamed about bedding her and who have made my article about Megan having the world’s best body the most read entry on this blog.

  • Whitney Houston gives heart-breaking, horrific “Bodyguard” performance in Australia

February 28th, 2010Teneshia LaFayeEntertainment, Whitney Houston

I still have an autographed photo of Whitney Houston from when I wrote to her fan club at age 10, and we happen to share the same birthday, Aug. 9th.
I became a fan of Whitney’s before she captivated the world with her rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” at the 1991 Super Bowl and before her breathtaking vocals on The Bodyguard movie produced the best-selling movie soundtrack of all-time.
So it was very painful to watch Youtube video of her singing The Bodyguard’s “I Will Always Love You”, the best-selling hit song ever written or sang by a female artist during her concert a few days ago in Brisbane to start off her tour through Australia.

Fans gave brutal criticism of Whitney after the concert in Australia.

Except for her “Star-Spangled Banner” performance, Whitney was always rumored to be a bad live performer even in her prime, but I doubt she ever struggled to find her voice and I hope she finds it again if her drug abuse hasn’t done irreparable damage.

Regardless, I will always love Whitney, and I’ll remember her better vocal days.

  • NAACP Awards too racially biased, Sandra Bullock denied and disrespected

    5

    February 27th, 2010Teneshia LaFayeEntertainment

I don’t usually watch the NAACP Image Awards because the show appears to be blantantly slanted toward Blacks, and though I am of African-American descent, I have diverse interests in music, movies, food and more.
And I just don’t think Blacks still need their own awards show with the respect they now have in the entertainment industry. Jay-Z and Beyonce are the highest paid celebrity couple.
Anyways, I tuned into the 41st Annual NAACPs for the first time last night, and not surprisingly, Blacks won all the major categories and most of the others.
The only non-black winners were CSI: Miami star Adam Rodriguez, who is of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent, and Dora the Explorer, an animated show featuring adventures of a little girl who speaks Spanish. Rodriguez won best supporting male actor for his role in Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself, and Dora won best children’s program.
My hat’s off to Sandra Bullock and her husband for showing up to the NAACP Awards and sitting on the front row. Bullock, who won a Golden Globe last month for her starring role in The Blind Side, ended up losing out to newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, star of Precious. Chris Rock couldn’t even pronounce Gabourey’s name, so he just announced “Precious” as the winner to prompt Sidibe to prance to the stage.
As another slap in the face, NAACP Awards co-host Hill Harper, who won an NAACP Award for his role in CSI: NY, walked over to Sandra Bullock to point her out as one of the greatest all-time performers in the audience.
But Hill messed up by saying he fell in love with Sandra in Pretty Woman and when she made the clay pot in Ghost.
It should be common knowledge by all races that Pretty Woman made Julia Roberts a star and Ghost won Demi Moore acclaim. Sandra just shook her head and gave the throat slashing gesture for Harper to stop talking. Speed made Sandra Bullock a star in 1994, but I was a fan when I saw her witty performance with Wesley Snipes and Sylvester Stallone a year earlier in Demolition Man.
I understand the NAACP Awards wishes to honors Blacks because the organization was founded to advance African-Americans. But if a non-Black is nominated for an award, they deserve to win it if they are the best in the category.
However, I’ll bet Sandra, who donated $1 million to Haiti relief, was happy for Gabourey, who she posed with on the red carpet.
But Sandra later received her due when she won her first Oscar for Best Actress on March 7.

  • Killer whale actually kills lady at Seaworld

    2

    February 24th, 2010Teneshia LaFayeEntertainment, Life

Can you believe killer whales actually do kill?
Seaworld park visitors witnessed it firsthand when veteran trainer Dawn Brancheau was killed during a routine with the whale named Tilikum on Wednesday at the Orlando theme park. An eyewitness said the trainer was jerked underwater by her ponytail while introducing the whale and explaining what the crowd would be observing.
It’s not the first time this whale has killed someone. The whale was involved in two other murders.
But respected celebrity animal expert Jack Hanna, in an interview on CNN, said the whale shouldn’t be blamed for either killing. He said that when an animal kills a trainer, such as Brancheau and murdered crocodile hunter Steve Irwin, it’s because of human error.
But animal rights groups have said that killer whales and other marine mammals have no place in theme parks because they are denied their natural instincts.
Well, this killer whale successfully followed its instincts and sadly killed a well-respected trainer.

Sunglasses manufacturer Oakley gave High School Musical heartthrob Zac Efron $200,000 to participate in a “Learn to Ride” surf promotion.
Oakley flew Zac to Sidney, Australia, where he spent four minutes in the water to help students learn to surf on Monday. Then, he went to hang out with his longtime girlfriend and High School Musical co-star Vanessa Hudgens.

Zac, 22, just signed a major deal with Warner Bros. to help bring two animated shows to the big screen, and he will be a presenter at 82nd Annual Academy Awards on March 7.

  • Beyonce voted for best body, but men want to bed Megan Fox

February 22nd, 2010Teneshia LaFayeBeyonce, Entertainment, Megan Fox

Hollywood studio 20th Century Fox polled 2,000 people to find the female celebrity with the best body and best physical assets to promote their movie, Jennifer’s Body, that stars Megan Fox.

The studio probably thought Megan, who also stars in the Transformers movies, had the advantage because the poll tied into a movie featuring her. Plus, women voted Megan the most enviable body in Heat magazine last year and she was voted the world’s sexiest women in 2008 and 2009.

But Beyonce was the winner in 20th Century Fox’s poll. She received the most votes for best body, best bootie, best boobs and best legs.

However, Megan was named the woman that men would most like to bed.

Megan already is self-conscious about her body and recently revealed that she isn’t pleased to look like a “pinup” in her ads for Emporio Armani underwear.

Incidentally, Megan replaced Beyonce as Armani’s female celebrity spokesmodel last year. But men and women think Beyonce looks better in underwear.
