Penn State’s Sandusky scandal plays out like recent Law&Order SVU episode

I immediately thought of a recent Law&Order SVU episode when I heard the details about former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky’s child abuse charges.
Although the culprit in the Sept. 28 SVU “Personal Fouls” episode was a basketball coach, his background and the allegations are eerily similar to the circumstances and actions surrounding Sandusky’s charges that became public a week ago.
Portrayed by the actor who played Kevin’s father on The Wonder Years, SVU‘s youth basketball coach was so highly regarded that professional players, portrayed by actual NBA stars Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh, gave the keynote speech at a dinner in his honor. The players said the coach was instrumental in their careers, but a former player who fell into depression interrupted to cry foul and it was discovered that the coach molested the boys in his youth league for years.
Sound familiar?
During his 30-plus years as a Penn State assistant coach, Sandusky created Second Mile, a children’s outreach organization in 1977, and all eight of his accusers were involved in the group during the 15-year period that Sandusky is charged with 40 counts of sexual abuse on young boys.
None of Sandusky’s accusers have been revealed to be Penn State players. The victims were schoolboys at the time, but some would be in their early to mid 20s now.
But I wonder if any actually Penn State players or NFL players will come out of the wood works to reveal being abused by Sandusky. During the halftime show on CBS’ broadcast of University of Florida versus South Carolina football game Saturday, former Notre Dame All-America Aaron Taylor discussed how he was sexually abused at the age of 5, and how he wished that someone at Penn State would have stepped forward sooner to prevent more little boys from being assaulted by Sandusky.
In the Law&Order episode, it turns out that the biggest NBA star was once sexually abused by the youth league coach. He spoke up when the detectives purposely took him to a community basketball court and the star professional player noticed the coach giving extra attention to a youth player who reminded him of himself.
Watch the Law&Order SVU episode in its entirety here. It’s eerily similar to the charges against Sandusky.
