Marilyn Monroe is considered the ultimate Hollywood sex symbol, but I think the “violet-eyed”, silky, black-haired English-born Elizabeth Taylor would have trumped the bottle-blonde fellow actress had she also died in her 30s of a drug overdose instead of hanging on until her heart gave out at age 79 on Wednesday.
Elizabeth’s Marilyn-esque curves were on display in iconic movie Cleopatra, which enabled her to steal her co-star Richard Burton from his wife long before Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt took their first breathe.
In fact, Liz lured away two married men, Carrie Fisher’s dad Eddie Fisher, and Burton, and she got them to marry her while Marilyn fooled around with president John F. Kennedy and had a 274-day marriage to Hall of Fame baseball player Joe DiMaggio.
Taylor dated Hall of Fame baseball player Ralph Kiner and married two legendary Hollywood actors, a movie producer and the heir to the Hilton hotels in a string of eight marriages, two to Burton, and seven divorces. She also battled addiction to pain killers and sleeping pills, like her deceased best friend Michael Jackson, after suffering a back injury in her star-turning role as a 12-year-old horse racing champion in National Velvet.
In spite of her Jolie-like scandals, Elizabeth Taylor was a symbol of grace and considered to be one of the few remaining Hollywood royalty. Her best friend Michael Jackson, who died nearly two years ago, described Taylor best in his “Elizabeth, I Love You” tribute performance.
Liz Taylor, who was crowned a dame which is like being knighted by Queen Elizabeth, earned her prestige after acting in more than 50 films, including star roles in iconic films such as Cleopatra, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. She also was a mother of four children, who she protected from being included in her many tabloid headlines. She won three Academy Awards, including an honorary trophy for her humanitarian work with AIDS and other causes.
Marilyn Monroe was never nominated for an Academy Award, and her humanitarian efforts are unknown.
My hope is that Elizabeth Taylor gets the same or more idolization as Monroe, who died so young that she never faced the media ridicule of aging and gaining weight like Taylor who God willed to survive 20 surgeries and a few health scares so her many fans could enjoy her for nearly three quarters of a century after she stole our hearts in National Velvet.

Thank you for your real written insightful comparison Teneshia. I always hear about M. Monroe, but she didn't do that much to me. And she conked out early which I think leads to her appeal.

I have to disagree. Marilyn was an icon even while she was alive. She had a sexy yet innocent look and personality. She was the true blonde bombshell. Today's blondes all look the same in Hollywood and they all have a girl next door look but Marilyn is unforgettable. She stands out. Elizabeth Taylor stands out too but there were other sexy brunettes that have been forgotten like Jane Russell, who was barely mentioned last month when she died. She was very glamorous too. Elizabeth Taylor was more diva like than Marilyn, like Cher, Barbara Streisand, etc.
I like Marilyn and Elizabeth, but if I had to choose I would pick Marilyn.
