Christina Aguilera’s brief pre-game appearance to sing the National Anthem overshadowed Usher and The Black Eyed Peas, who put together an electrifying performance of their many great hits during Super Bowl XLV’s halftime show Sunday.
While singing “The Star Spangled Banner”, the “Burlesque” actress and five-time Grammy Award winning singer mistakenly skipped over the verse “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?”, and she oversang the remainder of the song to cover up her flub. I noticed as soon as she skipped the line and mentioned it on my Twitter and Facebook pages.
Christina says she was just caught up in the moment and hopes people realize the spirit she was singing.
She still sings better than most of today’s entertainers and she likely would win a sing off with Whitney Houston, whose National Anthem at Super Bowl XXV in 1991 became a best-selling single, but only because Whitney’s voice has deteriorated greatly from drug abuse.
What’s funny is if Christina hadn’t goofed, no one would be able to recall in later years that she sang the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLV. But her mistake has placed her in Super Bowl lore alongside newly crowned Super Bowl XLV MVP Aaron Rodgers who led the Green Bay Packers to a 31-25 Super Bowl victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
Mark my words. Christina’s mistake will be a question on game shows Jeopardy or Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
It was obvious the singer realized her mistake and just wanted to hurry and get the song over with. Afterward, eyewitnesses backstage said she was devastated although people congratulated her. But she knew she messed up.
Yet it’s puzzling that Christina, who said she has sang the National Anthem since age 7, messed up when she sang it flawlessly at the NBA Finals last year.
I bet 9.5 out of 10 people don’t remember Christina’s amazing NBA Finals appearance, but they will certainly remember her Super Bowl goof more so than The Black Eyed Peas halftime performance.
