Airport scanners violate civil rights, but don’t protest during holidays (video)
With tens of millions of airport travelers during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, thousands of civil rights complaints are sure to make their way onto President Obama’s desk. People have already complained to Americans for Civil Liberties Union, and they should.
These new full body X-ray scanners found in 70 U.S. airports are a violation of human rights because screeners can see an outline of passengers’ nude bodies. Plus, the scanners are exposing people to radiation that could eventually lead to cancer. Then, there are horror stories like a man who was embarrassed after a patdown caused his urine to split from a pouch outside his body that drained his bladder.
The ACLU is requesting that passengers continue to report their experiences from the airport screenings.
A web site has been created urging airport travelers to protest the scanners and patdowns on Nov. 24, the day before Thanksgiving, to make it National Opt Out Day, but people should just comply until after New Year’s.
Have you noticed that these terrorist plots happen during the holidays when the perpetrators can mix in with the millions of travelers to skirt security? The Sept. 11 attacks happened at the conclusion of Ramadan, a monthlong Muslim fasting holiday. Shortly after 9-11, a man was caught carrying a bomb in his shoe on a flight from Paris to Miami. Then, there is the terrorist caught carrying a bomb in his underwear last Christmas.
With the new scanners and patdowns, it makes it less likely terrorists can carry bombs and other weapons under their clothes.
Yet it still makes it uncomfortable for the majority of law-abiding airport passengers. Before the scanners were installed, I was subjected to a patdown three years ago before a flight leaving L.A., and I didn’t like being patted up my leg and around, but not on, my crotch. It was due to the hairpins that held up my hair in pin curls. So I vowed to never wear hairpins anymore when I travel. Thank God I decided not to wear a skirt because that would have been much more uncomfortable.
So holiday travelers who dress appropriately can reduce their chances of going through the scanners or being patted down. Here are some great tips for what not to wear and how to quickly get through the airport screenings.
